Roman Greys are handmade, linear low-profile bricks designed to bring subtle texture, elegant proportions and natural variation to contemporary architecture. Their elongated format creates strong horizontal lines across a façade, visually broadening the building and giving the brickwork a refined, architectural character.

The appeal of Roman Greys lies in their understated palette. Soft greys, warm taupes and muted earthy tones are interspersed with occasional darker flashes and pale, chalky highlights. Rather than appearing flat or uniform, the colours gently shift across the wall as the light changes throughout the day.

This restrained variation allows Roman Greys to sit comfortably alongside timber, glass, steel, stone and concrete. In this project, the brickwork provides a beautiful transition between the warmth of the natural timber and the cooler tones of the window frames, river pebbles and surrounding landscape.

Each Roman Grey is individually formed by hand, giving the brick face subtle creases, folds, impressions and irregularities. Slight variations in size, shape, texture and colour are inherent characteristics of the handmade process—not defects to be eliminated.

Once laid, these individual differences combine to produce brickwork with genuine depth and movement. The result feels natural and established, avoiding the mechanical repetition commonly associated with highly uniform, mass-produced bricks.

The long, slender proportions of Roman Greys give them a distinctly contemporary appearance. Their low-profile format emphasises the horizontal mortar joints, creating a calm and visually expansive façade.

At corners and around openings, the linear format also highlights the craftsmanship of the brickwork. The bricks wrap cleanly around structural elements, drawing attention to the building’s form while maintaining a quiet and cohesive material palette.
